About

With my 31 year career as an engineer behind me, I’m now able to pursue my passions to the fullest.  My love of capturing images began back in the early ‘80s with black and white film and my own darkroom where I marveled at the the development process. When the digital era began replacing film and supplies became more difficult to find, I stepped away as the extensive time on the computer required in that new format was too close to how I spent most of my workday.  I sought out a more tangible way to express myself and found working with metal, flame, and hammer as a metalsmith gave me perfect balance and at times a way to relieve the stresses of day.

Now in retirement, I’ve rekindled my love of photography.  I capture the close up detail and beauty of flowers, worn beached objects, and elements of nature that cross my path on a flatbed scanner.  Once used to digitize my photographic negatives, my high-resolution scanner is now my ‘studio camera’ and the fine detail it captures never ceases to amaze me. Whether a single bloom or a ‘medley’ of treasures, the objects are placed directly on the scanner glass with the cover left open in a dark room. I build depth and layers from foreground to background on the glass surface. Using a preview feature, I can see the image as it will be recorded and rearrange elements until it’s just what I had imagined.

To me this process feels somewhat like organizing a group portrait. I place the individuals near one another in a pleasing and cohesive composition, intertwine outreaching elements to project a feeling of connection, and then capture the moment.

Overall, it’s all about passion, the joy of creating … and the continuous quest to learn and grow.
